Hokusai is said to have mastered not only the techniques of traditional Japanese Yamato-e painting, but also a variety of other Western techniques, both Eastern and Western. In fact, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji skillfully incorporates and mixes Western perspective and Yamato-e painting arrangement techniques, as well as Chinese shading techniques, which were said to be the most advanced at the time. He also used not only traditional mineral pigments, but also a new type of painting material called "Bero-ai" that was imported from Western Europe at the time.
