Description

Hokusai is said to have mastered not only the techniques of traditional Japanese Yamato-e painting, but also a variety of other Western techniques, both Eastern and Western. In fact, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji skillfully incorporates and mixes Western perspective and Yamato-e painting arrangement techniques, as well as Chinese shading techniques, which were said to be the most advanced at the time. He also used not only traditional mineral pigments, but also a new type of painting material called "Bero-ai" that was imported from Western Europe at the time. The reason that Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji is a masterpiece is that it is a work in which Hokusai poured "everything" he had accumulated, reaching a certain point of achievement. – Excerpt from the commentary – 32 sheets in total Postcard book format
