Hokusai is said to have mastered various techniques from both Eastern and Western traditions, not just the so-called traditional Japanese Yamato-e techniques.
In fact, in “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” he skillfully incorporated and blended Western perspective techniques, Yamato-e compositional methods, and the latest Chinese shading techniques of the time.
He used not only traditional mineral pigments but also a new type of material called “Berlin Blue,” which was imported from Europe at the time.
The reason why “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” is considered a masterpiece is precisely because Hokusai poured everything he had accumulated into it, reaching a certain pinnacle in his work.
